Across The Sky

Tuesday, February 10th, 2015

A song in 6/8. When I started working on this, I was feeling a little burned out and uninspired but I got caught up in working on a modular synth patch, which I recorded in an unusual way (one track with analog delay, the other with a phaser). I also had the microbrute hooked up to the modular and had them modulating each other, plus I used the oscillator on the microbrute but ran it through the modular so I had 2 oscillators. I also recorded the microbrute’s sound on a separate channel for additional depth.

I like the double-tracked vocals in this.

The lyrics I wrote in advance. I’ve found that’s a way I enjoy working — writing a pile of lyrics all at once and having them ready so that when I’m making a song I can choose from lyrics I’ve already written. I always need to do some editing, but if I have to stop mid-song to write lyrics it really breaks the flow of what I’m doing.

Synth lead: modular+microbrute recorded on 3 separate tracks with analog delay and phaser on 2.
Bass: minibrute
Beats: Arturia Spark LE
Reverb: ValhallaRoom

Undertow into the dark
Drowning in the deep
Undertow into the dark
Drowning in the deep

The last one inside
Is the last one alive
Many ways to oblige
A tall crushing tide

She heard a fleeting voice
Across the sky
Flowing to another
Magma line

She stood in disbelief
Of what she was hearing
A crowless dynamite
Atmospheric explosion

Listen to your apathy
Running through the room
Listen to the gravity
Endure the molten plume

She stood in disbelief
Of what she was hearing
A crowless dynamite
Atmospheric explosion

The sky closed and burned
A vast and glowing ember
Crushing the spirit of all
Living matter

She is responsible
But she can’t stop
If she can’t identify
She cuts right through it

The sky closed and burned
A vast and glowing ember
Crushing the spirit of all
Living matter

She went on her way
In silent drones
An eerie vacant world
Through rote motions

Cleaning solution
But the blood spilled
Is our own
Cut down by
Our frightened hands

She went on her way
In silent drones
An eerie vacant world
Through rote motions

Until the tides swept her away
Out from under
The tides swept her away
Further under

Undertow into the dark
Drowning in the deep
Undertow into the dark
Drowning in the deep

The sky closed and burned
A vast and glowing ember
Crushing the spirit of all
Living matter

Undertow into the dark
Drowning in the deep
Undertow into the dark
Drowning in the deep

Horde of Flies

Tuesday, February 10th, 2015

Here’s my second song from FAWM 2015, “Horde of Flies.” This one’s a bit further out of my comfort zone, a little more industrial. I wish I could have spent a lot more time on this one, but I need to keep moving or I won’t finish 14 songs this month. At the very least the vocals should be re-recorded, but we’ll see.

Failing
And flailing
Grown alabaster stone
Keeps falling around my footsteps
Keeping time with an endless fury

Fanciful devotion
Cleanliness unspoken
Shards of lives lie broken
A horde of flies bespoken

Clamping down on
A steep boardwalk
Entropy reigns long
Into the night

Timeless zones of motion
A horticultural notion
Oddly clinical potion
Trials of minimal devotion

Traipsing along the skirts
Appearing more or less unhurt
Until the skies unfold berzerk
Spills of chemical demurk

Stains on eyes
Telling me to step inside
A long and meaningful aside
Teaching us to pluralize

How long will we be blind
We feel an emptiness inside
Try to fill it all with lies
Killing us as we despise

Killing us as we despise
Killing us as we despise
A corporate history of lies
Killing me as I despise
I’d like to find myself inside
Killing us as we despise
Killing us as we despise
