Pinegrove Kayaking — again!

Thursday, July 27th, 2017

We went for another evening paddle, this time at Pinegrove, which was a return trip to the first place we took our kayaks. We were able to explore more of that area.

Before long, we saw herons. We kept hearing sudden, loud splashes around us. I’m not sure what made those sounds, but they surprised us!

We found a large beaver dam. We didn’t see any beavers, but we could hear them inside, chewing on the wood. Incredible!

We ended up having to portage at one point. It was a very narrow stretch of gravel. That’s the first time we’ve done that.

We headed back. We knew it was going to get pretty dark again by the time we got back.

Once we got back in the water, we were passed by a guy in a kayak, and talked to him for a few minutes. He continued on. We saw, a few times, deer splashing around in a very shallow section of the lake! I don’t have a good picture of that.

Unfortunately, we had another first: I got stuck in shallow mud! I thought I could paddle across to Sarah, but got caught in the mud and I figured it wouldn’t be too far to get through. I severely underestimated. I ended up getting out of the kayak and pushing it a ways, then getting back in. This worked out OK, but I was pretty beat at this point.

Another gorgeous evening on the water, and a little more adventure this time …
