Some fall scenes from Brown County, Indiana

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Brown County is a neighboring county with the largest state park in Indiana, Brown County State Park. This is a tourist destination especially in the fall, when thousands of people come out to see the leaves, some from quite a distance. I’m very lucky to have this nearby; I get to enjoy it in all seasons. Unfortunately, in the fall, it gets quite busy at times.

It’s worth dealing with the crowds, sometimes. Sarah and I went to the park last weekend and while there were quite a few people there, it wasn’t nearly as crazy as I’ve seen it in the past.

With scenes like this, it’s pretty obvious why the park is popular. This view is from just one of many vistas.

I also took some infrared shots of the same view. I wanted to see if the colored leaves would make a difference. In infrared shots, green leaves show up as white. Below, you can see some subtle orange pieces. The fall colors show through, but only slightly.

Here’s a differently composed, differently-processed shot of the same view.

After taking in that view, we went down to Strahl Lake. I snapped this shot and with a happy accident, pasted my IR raw processing settings on a non-IR image. It looks almost cross processed.

The lake was lovely.

After dealing with the crowds, we drove to another location, just a couple of away on a dirt road. We saw one other car, but no people. We had this whole beautiful lake to ourselves.

It’s good to know where the less-traveled spots are. Brown County State Park is fantastic, but I’m surprised how little people venture outside it. There’s so much more to see in the area.

I took a few more infrared shots. I’ve missed doing this kind of photography.

Makes me want to go wax my skis! Cool to see IR of the trees.

The leaves are losing their color here and they are falling by the bushel. It’s time to sharpen the rake.

Great photos! I especially loved the photo of the moon.
    Peace 🙂
